Spotlight on Noise
NASA gathers data in support of future quieter supersonic aircraft
NASA recently conducted test flights to better understand booms that would be generated by future quiet supersonic aircraft. NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in California, Langley Research Center in Virginia, and Kennedy Space Center in Florida teamed along with Space Florida to conduct flight tests to gather data to support the development of quieter supersonic aircraft. In August 2017, the research team, Sonic Booms in Atmospheric Turbulence, or SonicBAT II, flew NASA F-18 jets at supersonic speeds while researchers on the ground measured the effects of low-altitude turbulence on sonic booms.
